Psychedelic trance otherwise know as psytrance is electronic music driven by hypnotic rhythms and mesmerizing melodies.
It first came into prominence in 1995 when the British music press began to report on the explosion of Goa trance. Since then the genre has diversified massively, and now offers a huge variety of moods, tempos, and styles. Just a few of which are include melodic, full on, dark, progressive, suomi, psybreaks and psybient.

So why did the scene start in Goa? It was the first hippies that arrived in Goa, India in the mid 60’s and they were attracted to the area because of the stunning beaches, the low cost of living, the friendly locals, Indian religion, spiritual practices and last but maybe not least, the plentiful Indian hashish, legal at the time.
One of these hippies was Eight Finger Eddie and it was he and his friends who started the first ‘Goa parties.’ Initially just a few stoned friends sitting around a beach campfire playing acoustic guitar and dancing.
During the 70’s the first Goa DJs were generally playing psychedelic rock bands such as Led Zeppelin, the Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd and The Doors.
By the end of the decade early electronic bands’ music could occasionally be heard (especially tracks by Kraftwerk) and this eventually led to djs changing the Goa style over to electro. Bands from Europe that were in the forefront were the likes of of New Order, Frontline Assembly, Front 242 and more.
The tracks were remixed, lyrics removed, melodies and beats looped and sounds were changed in all manner of ways before the tracks were finally unveiled to the dancers as 100% Goa-style mixes. By ’85 100% of Goa music was electronic and people were constantly searching for new music to remix into the new Goa-style.
What made it even more exciting was that it was impossible to buy this music in stores; and in fact even today most psytrance sales are internet based downloads rather than in physical shops. The first commercially released Goa trance tune came in ’88 and is accredited to the KLF with What Time Is Love. But other psytrance artists around at the same time were pioneers like The Orb, Juno Reactor, Eat Static and also by The Infinity Project.
By ’92 the Goa psy trance scene had a pulse of its own, but ‘Goa trance’ wasn’t actually used to describe the genre until around ’94. New artists were springing up worldwide and in ‘94 first Goa trance festivals started, including the French Gaia Festival and the now world famous VooV festival in Germany.
The year before the first 100% Goa trance album was released, Project 2 Trance, featuring The Man With No Name and Hallucinogen to name just 2. Goa trance enjoyed its commercial peak between ’96 and ’97 with a fair bit of media attention and some huge names in the DJ scene joining the movement. This hype did not last long music sales fell. This ‘commercial death of Goa trance’ was marked musically by Matsuri Productions in ’97 with the release of the compilation Let it RIP.
