OHead - Electronic Music - Live Pictures

electronic music picture             electronic music pictures

A stellar wind and electronic shimmers conjure up the cosmos but then a vocal sample makes us think much more of the space within, as if ones consciousness is slowly being awoken. The first sequence can be heard and this is added to by another. We are now far from sleep rather hurtling at full speed. A rhythm is chucked into the steaming brew with soft synth pads fleshing out the sound. As if we weren’t close to overload already another heavier rhythm is added. A case of more is more? Good exciting bombastic stuff.

The second track is somewhat more subtle than the opener but even better. A slow sequential motif provides the framework for lovely effects to caress the mind. More sounds are added, each like a shining star, startling in beauty but with awesome power. Unlike the first number however the effect is much more of calm than speed. The foot certainly starts tapping when the main rhythm is added just before the half way mark, but really it is the sounds he uses that are the main focus. You can hardly call them lead lines because they never last for long before departing and another taking its place.

On to track number three, a real little gem. I know I keep going on about sounds but really the warbling sequence used here is like nothing I have ever heard before and it got my whole body bopping to it. The accompanying lead lines compliment it superbly. Awesome, absolutely bloody awesome! Surely it can’t get any better than this. On to track four and back to deep space. The sequence and initial gentle lead motif are subtlety personified. Piano melodies and bell like percussion are added to by an acoustic guitar sound giving the fifth track a very un-electronic feel but it is, as are all the pieces here, a delight. The next number is the longest at eighteen minutes. After a calm start the track develops into a fairly conventional sequencer / rhythm romp but by the eleven minute mark we are starting to get more of those unique sounds though the sequence shifts in a very Tangerine Dreamish sort of way. The melodies are always top notch and this is a very fine piece but somehow sounds a bit ‘normal’ compared to the inventiveness that has gone before. The title track finishes the album off back deep in the cosmos, all shimmers and effects making one think of outer space.

This is an album that will be enjoyed by people that like their Electronic Music 70’s influenced but at the same time sounding 90s without having to resort to dance rhythms. (DL)

Ohead Live This Year Making Their Ambient Space Music

ambient & chill out music             ambient music information

Featured article - What is Ambient Trance Music?

Ambient music is atmospheric in nature. Think Pink Floyd’s early work’s. Specifically the intros to their song’s. It’s the electronica music equivalent to background noise. The idea behind ambient music is to provide drifting sound for your conscious. It is not meant to be danced to, or even properly listened to. It’s music of semi-awareness rather than something you jam to.

Think of the nature sounds CDs you find at the store. They are or something to listen to when you want to relax. However, not all ambient music is intended for relaxation, but those CDs are a very good example. Ambient music can also be compared to elevator music, it’s something to provide atmospheric noise.

Early pioneers include Eric Satie, and Brian Eno. Satie was an early 20th century French composer who created a form of music, that he called "furniture music". Background music to be played during dinner, to create an atmosphere for eating.

Eno is credited with creating the term ‘ambient music’. He used it to describe music he created that can be actively listened to, or ignored. He used the term to separate his music from elevator music, and Muzak although they really do the same thing. The overall idea is to create an ambient atmospheric listening experience for people.

Creating ambient music in acid music studio can be very easy, or very hard depending on how much work you want to put into it. Since ambient music; in general, is about background noise you can pretty much do anything you want. Synthesizer, low bass; specifically humming bass that moves in and out, and other non-intrusive elements work best.

I like to use single elements, with high levels of Delay. They hit and echo away slowly, and the next element hits right about the time the one before it fades away. Sounds like wind, and running water are good, really anything will work. You can use drums or not, your call.

Industrial Ambient: Think quieter Nine Inch Nails, and Marylin Manson. Industrial ambient music uses the same techniques as regular industrial music, but in a more subtle way. A good comparison is horror movie background music, during chases. The music is intended to induce panic. While ambient industrial music is not necessarily use to create tension, the comparison stands. It tends to have a rather strong ritualistic flavor.

Acid music studio is perfect for creating all kinds of ambient music, including industrial ambient. Since this type is as varied as all the other kinds is impossible to say how you should start. Dissonant sounds, droning noise, very low-frequency resonance noises and sporadic percussion are good places to begin. I have created three loop libraries perfect for this kind of music. You can also look to odd radio noises for inspiration.

Great article about 60s Psychedelic Art

We Love It - Groovy!

Psychedelic art was shrouded in controversy since the time it was being practiced. Here is a look at some details associated with this art form and the role it played specifically in the 1960s.k

60s Psychedelic Art

Only a true artist would know the importance of art and how it can be a great form of self-expression. In all forms of art, one has witnessed the changing trends since the ancient days. These trends all are unique in their own way. While some are on the subtle side, others tend to be bit rebellious. The 1960s was one such period that witnessed many trends from the hippy culture to people who would love to rebel and be seen and heard. In art, psychedelic art was one such trend that raised quite a few eyebrows!

The distinctive characteristic of psychedelic art is the beautiful, colorful images that have a surreal feel to it. Psychedelic paintings are inspired by certain experiences. This art made use of beautiful and bright forms with detailing and such compositions always illustrated the psychedelic experiences felt by the artist. Surrealistic drawings, brightly colored patterns, detailing and even morphing were used to depict various scenes.

The term ‘psychedelic’ is used in relation with the experience that is felt by the person when in a rather ‘psychedelic’ state of mind. This condition is arrived to with the help of external influences, which cause hallucinations, and loss of the present state of mind. This is usually done with the help of drugs, which artists believed helped them to have that particular state of mind required to create psychedelic art. Psychedelic music is also based on the same thinking. Drugs such as LSD, Psilocybin and Mescaline were used by many to get to a rather ’surrealistic level’ of the mind. This art movement thus was pioneered by people who relied on these drugs.

The 1960s psychedelic art was particularly note worthy. These forms of psychedelic art soon spread worldwide. There were many poster artists who used this style of art to create posters for rock groups. These artists used the basics of psychedelic art - the contrasting colors and elaborate detailed forms. The 60s psychedelic art movement soon became a part of the counterculture of the 1960s. This counterculture was all about people that defied the traditional norms of the society. Psychedelic drugs were used by people to achieve the temporary state that caused changes in one’s mood and behavior. Psychedelia soon became a common feature in the 60’s. This term was used to describe not only the art, but also music and fashion. One can also see this term being associated with the hippy culture of the 1960’s.

This art soon was used for murals, as designs for album covers etc. These fantasy forms gained popularity by the end of the 1960s. Advertisers caught on to this movement and used the basics of psychedelic art to promote their products. These bright colors and swirling forms were considered appropriate for packaging various products.

Today, psychedelic art is witnessing many changes. Specific software has made it possible to experiment in this direction. Psychedelic designs are used as album covers for trance music. There are many outlets that cater to specific group of consumers who love to wear T-shirts with psychedelic prints. Graphic designers use the basics of psychedelic art to create beautiful 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional forms without the use of drugs.

Today psychedelic art has created a niche for itself amongst admirers of various styles of art. Well, it surely goes without saying, this art has its own beauty, which transports one to fantasy land.

Electronic Music New Releases

Based in Somerset,UK, OHead gently caress the ears with lush ambient psychedelia designed to float you away on a magic carpet ride to otherworldly dimensions. Sit back and enjoy your trip through the colourfull world of ohead.

Read on for what the world thinks of OHead’s recent electronic music release "Gaia’s Garden…..

OHead…"Gaia’s Garden"

Fans of pschedelic and ambient music are in for an absolute treat with this simply brilliant and quite stunning release from Ohead.

The man behind the band/music is Dave Hendry and the multi-instrumentalist already has a plethora of work to his name but I doubt if he has previously produced anything as devastatingly good as this.

Guitar and keyboards combine fluidly with drums and bass to produce an instrumental landscape of sound that is dreamy, ethereal and atmospheric. A tad of space rock for sure but think of the mighty Ozrics and early Porcupine Tree given full reign to experiment in rhythms and sound effects and you’ll have some idea of what is happening here.

Hendry has been very clever as he uses several guests to devastating effect on several of the tracks. The genre of psychedelic/ambient rock simply doesn’t get any better than this.

T.C The Classic Rock Society magazine Aug/Sept 2008

OHead…"Gaia’s Garden"

Possibly the best psychedelic-ambient album of the year… ‘Ohead’ is purely the work of ‘Dave Hendry’, who has a colourful and extensive musical history, as a composer, producer and musician.

This unique masterpiece is dynamic, atmospheric and saturated with feel-good factor… interwoven with keyboards… guitar and polished to perfection!

OHead…"Gaia’s Garden"

David Hendry from the UK is a very busy fellow who has released different kinds of electronic music under various monikers. OHead is one of his projects that has prior to this new CD released two great, cosmic and psychedelic ambient albums. I reviewed Steps Across the Cortex, the latter of these, last year.

On Gaia’s Garden David plays synthesizers, bass, guitars and sings as well as does the programming. Rachel Hutchinson (saxophone), Will Greenwood (lead and glissando guitar) and Gaz (lead guitar) are also featured as guests on one track each. Gaia’s Garden is a very well produced, psychedelic and mostly electronic ambient album that has a bit organic feel too because of the guitars and bird song. The music is pretty original, although it evokes similar feelings than early/mid 90’s Astralasia, Banco de Gaia etc. Excellent music!

DJ Astro,Psychotropic Zone 2008

From Aural Innovations 40 (September 2008)

Ohead is the one-man space band of David Hendry. Hendry has extensive experience in the electronic music scene in genres such as trance, ambient and drum n’ bass.

And while his Ohead project draws on some of those influences, Hendry infuses it with so much more, adding guitars and bass to the electronics for a fusion of sound reminiscent of Ozric Tentacles in many ways, but different as well.

Hendry has a polished sheen to his production, the non-electronic instruments having gently rounded edges, melding into the mix with the electronics for a smoother and less raunchy sound than you often hear with the Ozrics. It’s mostly instrumental music, except for the occasionally freaky voice sample, and of course the mysterious and edgy track Timeless Sun, which features spacey, processed singing from Hendry himself, multi-talented guy that he is.

Ohead hearkens back to the electronica and festival sounds of the 90’s while pushing forward and exploring new territory for the future. Lush, rhythmic and spaced out, this is music for the head. The O-head, that is.

History of Psytrance Part Two

And then there were the Israelis. Until ’88 India’s borders were closed to Israelis. After they opened, many Israelis, when they’d finished theire military service, travelled to India. When they returned to Israel they took Goan music (and drugs) back with them and in ’90 the first psychedelic ‘full moon gatherings’ on Nizanim’s beaches began.

With so much Goa music coming across the border into Israel it was hugely influential on young Israeli music makers and soon new top quality producers appeared, the most famous of which is Astral Projection.

The police clamped down hard on these psychedelic gatherings and it seemed that a new formula was needed, one that would allow trancers to get maximum enjoyment from the party before it was shut down. This new formula became Nitzhonot, (victorious trance). Basic, fast, and cheesy, with short intense sets; so revellers got an intense experience from the beginning of the party until it was stopped.

By ’96 the music had changed so much from its Goa beginnings that the term Goa trance no longer really fitted the newer style so the new term of psychedelic trance, Goa psytrance, or psytrance for short, was being used. The multi-layered melodies of Goa trance were stripped away and the resulting darker, more repetitive from of music concentrated on rhythm and groove. A classic album is ‘98’s album Radio by X-Dream.

In ’02 however melodies became popular again, heralding the beginning of full-on psytrance.

Fans of full on should check out the sounds of OHead, one of the UK and Europe’s most exciting psychedelic electronic and psytrance bands. Check out their stunning site here for sounds/visuals and downloads.

The current psytrance scene has many sub-genres, among them, minimal/progressive psy, morning psy, full-on psy, and dark psy. There has also recently been a movement to ‘return to the source’ ie. the original Goa trance sound, such as Metapsychic Records and Suntrip Records, which are reviving the roots of the scene and promoting artists trying to recapture that original Goa trance sound.

We carry on the story of goa psytrance…..

Goa Psychedelic Trance Goes Ambient…..

Psybient Psychedelic Ambient

Psybient, also known as "Ambient Psy", "Psychedelic Ambient", "Ambient Goa", "Ambient Psytrance" and more commonly within the Goa/psytrance scene as "Psychill" & "Psydub", is a genre of electronic music that combines elements of psychedelic trance, ambient, world music, new age and even ethereal wave.

It often has many dub influences and can also sound somewhat like glitch. Psybient pieces are often structured around the concept of creating a "sonic voyage" or "musical journey". Although similar to psytrance’s emphasis on maintaining non-stop rhythm throughout the night, psybient is far more focused on creating a vast soundscape that can be experienced over the length of an album, focusing less on beatmatching and allowing for a myriad of tempo changes.

Psybient artists include Shpongle, Entheogenic, Bluetech, Shulman, Kick Bong, Pitch Black, Younger Brother and Capsula.

Visit the Stunning OHead Site Here for music, visuals, downloads, live pics and the whole OHead experience

Atmospheric Interludes in Goa

Because of the heat, humidity, and dust in Goa, the birthplace of Goa trance (which was the precursor of psytrance), DJs tended to use cassette tapes or DATs instead of vinyl records[citation needed]. As a result, beatmatching was very hard, and many of the earliest DJs who worked within the Goan scene didn’t bother trying at all, the notorious Goa Gil being one of them.

As a solution to the dilemma, a production technique developed of having relatively long atmospheric portions in each track, which would allow a DJ to easily mix two tracks of different tempos without having them clash.[1] These short periods that were free of heavy, bass driven beats acted as "chillout" periods for those who were dancing (or "tripping") to relax and regain their energy for the next track.

"Chill Tracks" in Psytrance

From its inception, albums (as well as compilations) released within the psytrance genre almost always contained a compulsory "chillout" track at the end, probably intended to decompress the listener after a somewhat stimulating audible experience (hear and see Cosmosis - Cosmology).

Early Chill Albums

Perhaps the earliest album consisting entirely of "chill tracks" was Mystical Experiences by The Infinity Project in 1995. But the genre really took off after Shpongle (a project involving some members of The Infinity Project) released Are You Shpongled? in 1998. Slowly but surely, the diverse, ever evolving style that has come to be known as "psybient" or "psychill" has been adopted by a marginal number of artists.

It is interesting to note that although relatively successful for a small sub-genre, psybient has not expanded hardly as rapidly in recent years as its parent genre, psytrance.

Psychedelic Influence

Due to its roots in the LSD laden Goa scene, psybient is considered to be highly influenced by psychoactive drugs, even more so than other forms of psytrance. The influence of psychedelics is often blatantly presented in both the musical content (such as "trippy", tweaked-out samples) and in the artwork.

An example of this can be seen in the title of track six of Shpongle’s album Are You Shpongled?. The song’s name, "Divine Moments of Truth" is a tribute to the psychedelic drug Dimethyltryptamine (DMT).

Success with the Downtempo Market

In recent years, psybient has received a considerable amount of success in the chillout/downtempo market, a listener group far larger than the psytrance audience. An example of psybient’s foothold within the "chill" market can be seen in the success of Entheogenic’s second album, Spontaneous Illumination. In November of 2003 it went to Number 1 on the German "Chill-Out" Charts, where it remained at Number 1 for 8 weeks. The album stayed in the Top 10 for an additional 12 weeks.

Psybient in Suomisaundi

Some artists of the psychedelic trance offshoot suomisaundi have also been known to delve into the realm of psybient. Among these artists are Luomuhappo [1] and ShaManiacs. Due to the suomisaundi’s tendency towards sampling, as well as its popularity at forest dance parties like Earthcore, psybient productions that come out of the suomisaundi realm of psychedelic trance often resemble world music far more than productions of artists who produce psybient exclusively.
