The Beatles Best Four Psychedelic Albums

These are the four Beatles albums you need if you are into psychedelic music. I will not put them in order (other than alphabetical) because you really need all four of them and I don’t want you thinking you can get away with leaving any of them off your list.

Magical Mystery Tour (1967)

This is probably The Beatles most purposefully trippy album. Almost every song on the album is bursting with mind melting madness of some type or another whether it be experimental production, unusual song arrangements, and/or unusual songwriting. "I Am The Walrus" & "Strawberry Fields Forever" are arguably John Lennon at his most "mad." These are the songs where he went full out with the "kitchen sink" production, the bizarre lyrics, the unexpected song arrangements. It’s all there. "Flying," "Blue Jay Way," and the title track "Magical Mystery Tour," these are songs designed to melt minds and they do just that.

Revolver (1966)

What brililant songs. And what an amazing variety in music in such a compact album. There’s more variety in this 35 minute album than in most band’s whole careers. And it’s all done so incredibly well. And then there’s "Tomorrow Never Knows" which could very well be the most far out song The Beatles ever recorded.

Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967)

This is a trip. Sure the "concept" isn’t really all that tight, but I think that’s why it works so well. It’s like you are in a carnival going around hearing these different incarnations of the same band. Again a wild selection of different styles of music but unlike Revolver, each of the songs somehow sounds connected to each other as well. It’s an amazing trick to make "Within You Without You" & "When I’m 64" make sense together on the same album.

This is an album that has become so legendary that sometimes I think people don’t properly appreciate how great it is. It is not overrated. It really is that good. If you think otherwise, you may have not got out of that stage where you want to be different just for it’s own sake.

The White Album(1968)

I talk a lot about variety in this article because that’s one of the things that I love most about The Beatles music and it’s one of the things that I think makes listening to their albums so trippy. Well this is the peak of that variety. There’s 30 tracks here and a vast majority of them are completely different than the other 29 songs on the album. In many ways this is the ultimate Beatles trip and I think it’s their best album ever (psychedelic or not.)

And then there’s "Revolution #9." It’s hard to get much more psychedelic than that. If you really listen to this track closely on headphones you are likely to get yourself quite a scare and I think that makes the song quite a successful piece of sound art.

The Beatles - The Beatles [White Album]

The Beatles self-titled LP, or the “White Album,” is my favorite by them. It’s impossible to just pick any Beatles’ album and say it’s their most important or quintessential.

Psychedelic Shrooms, Hallucinogenic Shrooms

"Shrooms spiritial effects still strong a year later….

A new survey shows that powerful, spiritually transforming experiences under the influence of psychedelic mushrooms still rank high a year later.

By Anastacia Mott Austin

Timothy Leary would be proud.

A new survey, published in this month’s Journal of Psychopharmacology, revealed that test subjects who’d had deep spiritual experiences on "shrooms" reported strong feelings even a year later.

A group of 36 pre-screened volunteers who said they had "active spiritual lives" were given psilocybin, the active ingredient in psychedelic mushrooms. Two-thirds of the subjects reported having a "full mystical experience" at the time, and many reported feeling "a one-ness with the universe."

This is a very high percentage to begin with, but almost 14 months later 67% of the same subjects reported the experience as "the most, or one of the five most spiritually significant experiences of their lives," said the survey’s authors.

One of the volunteers commented, "Surrender is intensely powerful. To ‘let go’ and become enveloped in the beauty of - in this case music - was enormously spiritual."

Wow, groovy.

"It’s one thing to have a dramatic experience you say is impressive. It’s another thing to say you consider it as meaningful 14 months later," said Roland Griffiths, a neuroscientist at Johns Hopkins and lead researcher of the study. "There’s something about the saliency of these experiences that’s stunning."

psychadelic shroomsThe volunteers had not used psychedelic drugs before, and reported a regular spiritual or religious practice. They were given the drug in a "supportive" environment and encouraged to use face masks to block out external stimuli.

In follow-up testing, the experiences the subjects had had corresponded to what would have happened in their lives following a "naturally occurring mystical experience." Each of the subjects who reported the test as one of the most spiritually significant of their lives also said they had more satisfaction in life in general since the experiment.

"This is truly remarkable finding," said Griffiths to reporters. "Rarely in psychological research do we see such persistently positive reports from a single event in the laboratory." The scientists involved are now interested in applying their findings to therapeutic cases, such as patients facing end-of-life issues with cancer, people with depression, or possibly even drug addiction.

"This gives credence to claims that the mystical-type experiences some people have during hallucinogen sessions may help patients suffering from cancer-related anxiety or depression, and may serve as a potential treatment for drug dependence. We’re eager to move ahead with that research."

Griffiths said that while it may seem controversial to some, drug addicts might find some healing from the connection to a higher power during a hallucinatory experience.

"It does sound counterintuitive," said Griffiths to reporters at Scientific American, adding that "six of the 12 AA [Alcoholics Anonymous] steps are related to a higher power and surrendering to it. Many people don’t engage fully into the 12-step program because they don’t have a connection to a higher power."

Added Griffiths, "One can’t help but wonder whether an experience like this might be useful."

If you like trance then read today’s featured article….

Trance music is a subgenre of electronic dance music that developed in the 1990s. Trance music is generally characterized by a tempo of between 124 and 148. Trance music is generally characterized by a tempo of between 124 and 148 bpm, featuring repeating melodic synthesizer phrases, and a musical form that builds up and down throughout a track, often crescent doing or featuring a breakdown.

Trance becomes more popularized, thanks to talented trance music DJ’s and producers, trance music labels, and even large recording companies. The mixture of Goa and psychedelic trance music is the popular kind of trance performance to many trance listeners.

Dance

Perhaps the most ambiguous genre of dance music, trance could be described as a melodic, more or less freeform style of music, partially derived from house. The best way to generally describe the trance genre is that of dance music based around rifts and anthems, which can be either highly energetic or very chilled out. Up tempo, uplifting and often euphoric energetic synthesized sounds pumped by a beat and massive hooks, often with long breakdowns building slowly to create a tension and expectancy on the dance floor.

The repetitive nature of much of the early trance tracks provided club-goers with the ideal chance to immerse themselves in anew style of music after a period of relative quiet on what had been termed the "dance" scene. By the mid-1990’s, trance had emerged commercially as one of the dominant genres of dance music. But most fans of dance music will fondly remember the early and mid-90’s as the "good old days" of trance, with some of the most beautiful and profound tracks produced during this time. Eye Candy is an electronic dance artist who creates progressive trance, break beat, minimal Detroit techno and ethno dance music.

Remix

As early as 1990, German musician Harald Bluechel(aka Cosmic Baby) was experimenting with classical piano and synthesizer melodies contrasted against techno rhythms, and in 1993released one of the most popular trance songs of all time, "Cafe delMar" (under the pseudonym Energy 52) which is still being remixed today. Recording under the aliases Paragliders, The Ambush, Spicelaband LSG, Lieb remixed almost every trance producer of note during the90’s and continues to do so today. Music production company experienced in remixing and sound design. " Artists like Brian Transeau (BT), Paul Van Dyk, Ferry Corsten, and Underworld came to the forefront as premier producers and remixers, bringing with them the emotional, "epic" feel of the style. Vocal remix album of dance genres like progressive/electro/trance.

Pop and rock stars are starting to collaborate with or even outsource their recordings to trance music composers and producers. You can arguably trace trance music back to religious roots emanating from a spiritual state of mind reminiscent of shamanism and elements of bhuddism. Goa trance is form of electronic music and is a style of trance music which originated in the Indian region of Goa. Generally 8-12 minutes long, Goa tracks usually have a noticeably stronger bass line than other trance music and incorporate more organic "squelchy" sounds.
